He is the lead clinician for hysteroscopic surgery at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital and has special interests in treating women with heavy periods and pelvic pain, and in hysteroscopic and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. Mr Burrell offers conservative treatments for heavy periods as well as the latest advances in endometrial ablation and performs hysterectomy when other options are not suitable. Having undergone specific training he is able to perform laparoscopic hysterectomy in addition to more traditional abdominal and vaginal methods.
He has a particular interest in the management of endometriosis which can cause pain and subfertility and performs laparoscopic surgery to provide a definitive diagnosis. Laparoscopy allows laser treatment to relieve symptoms & enables a faster recovery than other surgery methods. Mr Burrell finds it very rewarding to see women who have benefited from such surgery.
Mr Burrell runs a high quality ultrasound scanning service, performing both gynaecology and pregnancy scans and is the lead clinician for Fetal Medicine scanning at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital.
After training in London at Queen Charlottes and UCLH Mr Burrell was appointed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Luton & Dunstable Hospital in 2000.
He has dual postgraduate qualifications with both MRCP and MRCOG.
Since 2009 he has been part of the Council of the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy and runs a National Course for the Royal College for hysteroscopy. He is a Senior Lecturer at University College London Hospital (UCLH) and Beds and Herts Post Graduate Medical School.
Mr Burrell lives in Harpenden with his wife, three children and a Tonkinese cat. His wife runs a complementary health clinic in St Albans. Together they enjoy tennis, socialising with friends and discovering new restaurants.
His ultimate passions are for windsurfing and skiing despite the number of times he seems to fall over. He enjoys the challenge of teaching these sports to his children.
