There are a number of different ultrasound scans that are suitable for different stages of pregnancy:-

Fetal Viability Scan (6 to 10 weeks)

This scan can be carried out from 2 weeks after a positive pregnancy test. At this stage it may be possible to detect the heartbeat. This may be an internal scan if performed in early pregnancy. The scan aims to:-

  • check the pregnancy is in the womb (not ectopic)
  • diagnose twins (or more)
  • confirm the viability (heartbeat)

This scan is useful for women who are experiencing pain or bleeding in the pregnancy and for those who have had previous miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies.

Nuchal Scan (11 weeks +1 day – 13 weeks + 6 days)
